Minimum high school course requirements for admission to associate (two-year) degree programs

The basic requirements are listed below. Keep in mind that some programs and majors may have slightly different requirements or recommendations. Click the subject links to see more detailed information.

English

Four units, including one unit each in composition and literature

Foreign Language/Social Studies/Art/Humanities

Five units in any combination of foreign language, social studies, arts, and humanities are required. These units may include advanced placement courses in the arts.

Science

Two units of science are required. Specific programs have further requirements and recommendations.

  • Medical Laboratory Technology: one unit each in biology and chemistry is recommended
  • Nursing: one unit each in biology and chemistry is required
  • Physical Therapist Assistant Program: one unit in biology and one other science unit is recommended

Math

Two units of mathematics are required. Types of courses vary according to degree program.

The following programs require one unit of algebra and one unit in any combination of advanced algebra, plane geometry, solid geometry, or trigonometry:

  • Radiological Sciences
  • Information Sciences and Technology
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Science, Surveying Technology
  • Telecommunications Technology
  • all Engineering Technology programs

The following programs require any combination of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, or general mathematics:

  • Agricultural Business
  • Criminal Justice
  • Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management
  • Human Development and Family Studies
  • Letters, Arts, and Sciences
  • Occupational Therapy

The following programs require one unit of algebra and one additional unit of mathematics:

  • Business Administration (plane geometry recommended)
  • Forest Technology (plane geometry recommended)
  • Manufacturing Technology (plane geometry recommended)
  • Nursing
  • Physical Therapist Assistant
  • Wildlife Technology (plane geometry recommended)
